Senior Estimator

An established general contractor serving institutional, commercial, and industrial markets across Western and Northern Canada is seeking a Senior Estimator to join its team. Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the Senior Estimator will play a key role in supporting preconstruction, project development, and operations teams by delivering comprehensive estimating services across a range of project types and contract models. This position requires experience preparing estimates at various stages of design — including conceptual pricing — and working within delivery methods such as Construction Management, Design-Build, Lump Sum, and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD). The role also involves leading tender processes, reviewing subcontractor and supplier pricing, and contributing to award recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Solicit, review, and level subcontractor and supplier quotations
  • Build and maintain strong trade and supplier relationships
  • Maintain and update unit pricing and productivity databases
  • Prepare detailed and accurate estimates including quantity take-offs and pricing analysis
  • Participate in client meetings and project interviews as required
  • Collaborate with consultants and owners to address scope changes and cost adjustments
  • Assist in preparing cost studies, value engineering recommendations, and pricing scenarios
  • Develop complete proposals for management review and ensure timely submission prior to bid deadlines
  • Identify and assess risks that may impact pricing and develop mitigation strategies
  • Participate in internal project team and tender review meetings
  • Support the development and mentoring of junior estimating staff
  • Maintain estimating systems and software tools
  • Contribute to ongoing professional development and training initiatives
  • Perform additional duties as required

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, scheduling tools, Bluebeam, and estimating platforms (experience with InEight considered an asset)
  • Strong knowledge of construction sequencing and scheduling fundamentals
  • Skilled in performing manual and digital quantity take-offs
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to define subcontractor scopes of work and identify insurance and bonding requirements
  • Experience participating in tender closings
  • Strong understanding of client expectations and contractual obligations
  • Ability to lead meetings and present estimate details confidently
  • Capable of conceptualizing project scope and identifying alternative approaches for cost or schedule optimization
  • Knowledge of lean construction principles and risk assessment practices
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Post-secondary education in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline (or equivalent technical background)
  • Professional Engineer designation or technical certification considered an asset
  • 10+ years of estimating experience within the general contracting industry
  • Experience across various project types and contract structures
  • Previous operational experience as a Project Coordinator or Project Manager is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor team members and contribute to collaborative planning efforts
